Description
This French Onion Chicken Bake skips the soup mix and delivers deep, comforting flavors with caramelized onions, melted cheese, and tender chicken.
Ingredients
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
1 cup shredded Swiss or Gruyère cheese
1 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp butter
1/2 tsp dried thyme
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup chicken broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp Dijon mustard
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat.
3. Add sliced onions and cook slowly for 15–20 minutes, stirring, until golden and caramelized.
4. Add garlic and thyme; cook 1 minute more.
5. Season chicken with salt and pepper; brown lightly on both sides in a separate pan.
6. In a bowl, mix broth, Worcestershire, and Dijon mustard.
7. Place chicken in a baking dish, top with onions, and pour broth mix around.
8. Sprinkle cheese over each chicken breast.
9. Bake for 25–30 minutes until chicken is cooked through.
10. Broil 2–3 minutes at the end for golden bubbly cheese.
11. Rest 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
Make onions a day ahead to save time.
Use bone-in chicken thighs if preferred—just extend baking time.
Great served with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.
