Description

Ingredients

  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 cups beef or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese (optional)
  • 1/2 baguette, sliced (optional)

Instructions

  • Slice the onions thinly.
  • Heat butter in a large pot over medium heat and add the onions. Sauté for 20-25 minutes, stirring frequently, until caramelized and golden brown.
  • Season with salt and pepper, then add thyme and bay leaves.
  • Pour in the broth and bring to a simmer. Cook for 30 minutes.
  • While the soup simmers, toast the baguette slices in the oven until golden.
  • Ladle the soup into bowls, top with toasted bread, and sprinkle with grated cheese.
  • Optionally, place the bowls under the broiler to melt the cheese. Serve hot and enjoy!
