Description
This onion soup recipe features caramelized onions in a savory broth, topped with melted cheese and crispy bread. It’s the perfect warming meal!
Ingredients
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 4 cups beef or vegetable broth
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 2 bay leaves
- 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese (optional)
- 1/2 baguette, sliced (optional)
Instructions
- Slice the onions thinly.
- Heat butter in a large pot over medium heat and add the onions. Sauté for 20-25 minutes, stirring frequently, until caramelized and golden brown.
- Season with salt and pepper, then add thyme and bay leaves.
- Pour in the broth and bring to a simmer. Cook for 30 minutes.
- While the soup simmers, toast the baguette slices in the oven until golden.
- Ladle the soup into bowls, top with toasted bread, and sprinkle with grated cheese.
- Optionally, place the bowls under the broiler to melt the cheese. Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, use vegetable broth instead of beef broth.
- If you prefer a creamier texture, blend the soup before serving.
- Adjust the seasoning to taste, especially with the thyme and bay leaves.
