Ingredients
Dry Ingredients:
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons instant yeast
Wet Ingredients:
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Vegan Cheese and Jalapenos:
- 1 cup shredded vegan cheddar cheese
- 2–3 fresh jalapenos, diced
- 2 tablespoons pickled jalapenos (optional)
Optional Add-ins:
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
Garnish:
- Sesame seeds or flaky sea salt
Instructions
- Prepare the Dry Ingredients: Combine flour, salt, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl.
- Activate the Yeast: Add warm water and olive oil. Mix until the dough forms.
- Knead the Dough: Knead on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1-2 hours until doubled.
- Incorporate Jalapenos and Cheese: Gently fold in jalapenos and vegan cheese without overworking the dough.
- Shape the Dough: Form into a loaf or smaller shapes and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Second Rise: Cover and let the shaped dough rise for 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake: Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. Tap the bottom to check if it sounds hollow.
- Cool: Let cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For less spice, reduce the number of jalapenos or use mild ones.
- Store the bread in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- You can freeze the bread for up to 1 month; thaw and reheat as needed.
